Noninvasive laser and/or (IPL) is an advanced treatment (non-ablative-no sloughing of the skin) of the skin which can treat a variety of blemishes. Laser or light energy is selectively utilized to reduce the appearance of unwanted facial wrinkles, uneven pigmentation, freckles, stretch marks, blood vessels on the nose/face, and even acne scars. This energy is gently and precisely delivered to the skin in such a way that normal surrounding tissue is not adversely affected. In addition, this procedure has little or no downtime associated with it- meaning that patients can go to work and resume their normal daily lifestyle with in a few days.
WHAT IS THE ADVANTAGE OF THIS TYPE OF SKIN TREATMENT
In the past, the only laser that was effective for wrinkle reduction was the CO 2 carbon dioxide laser (an ablative laser). This treatment required 10 days or more of healing and resulted in some discomfort for the patient. Recent research has shown that one only has to gently stimulate the superficial portion of the skin to achieve an effective cosmetic result. Without the need for intensive peeling or general anesthesia, the procedure is both safe and affordable.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE SIDE EFFECTS FROM THE PROCEDURE?
After therapy, there is mild sunburn like reaction which can last up to a few days. When treating skin growths or brown spots, redness and crusting can take up to 10 days to resolve. These side effects are easily managed with the use of over the counter corticosteroid creams or our “Post Laser Kit” which employs healing copper peptide complexes. We also encourage the use of Dermacia MD Lycogel® Camouflage products to help with healing and to minimize post treatment redness.
HOW MANY TREATMENTS ARE REQUIRED?
On average, three to five treatment sessions are performed every four to six weeks to achieve a 50% to 80% improvement. Results can be enhanced with the simultaneous use of Botox® or fillers such as Restylane™ or Radiesse™. (see below)
WHAT IS PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY (PDT)?
Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is an advanced treatment of the skin which can treat a variety of skin blemishes, precancers and acne lesions. Laser or light energy is combined with a chemical called “A LA” aminolevulenic acid to reduce acne lesions, diminsh oil production and improve the skin flaws that are induced by chronic sun damage. This procedure is less expensive than full face dermasanding or CO 2 laser resurfacing and is a more versatile procedure. PDT, like IPL or nonivasive laser procedures, allows patients to resume their life-style within 3 to 7 days.
PDT AND ACNE
PDT is extremely effective for acne patients. It is a safe alternative to oral antibiotics or Accutane™ . Treatments are carried out every 3 to 4 weeks. A total of up to five sessions may be needed to see a fifty to eighty percent reduction in acne lesions. This treatment also can help to diminish acne lesions, scars, large pores and age spots, thereby making it a versatile treatment option.
PDT AND SUNDAMAGED SKIN
PDT is also a wonderful technique for the removal of skin precancers and the changes associated with aging. Skin wrinkles, age spots, blood vessels and time associated skin growths can all be improved using this state of the art treatment. Sessions are carried out every three to four weeks.. A total of 2 to 5 sessions may be needed to see a fifty to eighty percent improvement in skin quality and tone. Treatments are performed on a monthly basis.
BLU-U™ THERAPY FOR ACNE
Patients with mild acne may opt to have Blu-U™ only treatment to improve their complexion. Acne lesions clear much faster with Blu-U™ therapy (compared to oral or topical therapies) and systemic side effects are minimized. A total of 10 sessions with occasional microdermabrasion are needed to see a response. Blu-U™ patients experience no downtime. For patients with mild acne, cost savings can be dramatic.
Results can last up to 6 months with repeat treatments being performed when new acne
lesions begin to appear. Blu-U is a safe alternative for those patients who wish to become pregnant or would like to shy away from antibiotic usage. Please note that there is a 10% nonresponder rate .
